Benefits of celery seed

Celery is widely known for its green, crispy stalks, which many love to eat, but it is less known for its seeds. Celery seeds are often used in culinary dishes for their warming and bitter flavor, but they also have several medicinal benefits for the body.

  • Provides antioxidants: Celery seed contains antioxidants that help fight free radicals in the body that can cause cellular damage and inflammation. Celery seeds can also support the body's natural defense against illnesses. Here are some ways celery seed can help you.
  • Promotes bone health: Celery seed contains minerals like calcium and manganese that promote bone density.
  • Relieves muscle spasms and muscle tension: It contains active ingredients like umbelliferone and Alpha-linoleic that help relax muscles.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Celery seed can help reduce inflammation in the body that causes aches and pains.
  • Promotes red blood cell formation: Celery seed is a source of iron, which may help the body produce red blood cells.
  • Supports healthy circulation and calmness: Celery seed can help relax blood vessels in the brain and body, improving circulation and bringing a sense of calmness.

Common Ways to Use Celery Seed

Spice: The most popular way to use celery seed is to cook with it. Its warming and bitter flavor is great in spice blends, pickling, soups, stews, and marinades.

Tea: You can make a simple celery seed tea by steeping 1 tsp of celery seeds in 8 ounces of boiling water for at least 15 minutes. You can sweeten it with raw honey to taste.

Tinctures: Celery seed is also consumed in tincture form. You can readily find them at health stores or online. Tinctures are also quite simple to make, although it takes about a month before the tincture is ready to be used.

Capsule/Powder: Another popular way to consume celery seed is in capsule or powdered form. Making your own capsules is quite simple.

Growing Information

It'll be challenging to find celery growing wildly, as wild celery only grows in Europe and West Asia in marshy areas. You can easily buy celery seeds online, but did you know you can grow your own celery and harvest the seeds? This all depends on your USDA hardiness zone.

Celery will grow well in zones 2-10, covering most areas of the United States. It loves loam, sandy, and clay soils and does well with a thin layer of compost on top after planting starter plants. It's recommended to start celery indoors at least 10-12 weeks before the last frost date. Celery will thrive in full sun and partial shade, and because it is a marshy plant, it needs much more water than most other plants in your garden. To harvest the celery seeds, you will need to cut the stalks after they have flowered and allow them to dry out. Once they are dry, roll the flowers around in your fingers to loosen the seeds.

Safety Concerns

Celery seed has been used for a few centuries for its health-supporting qualities in Europe and parts of Western Asia, where it is native. The Greeks and Romans widely used it as medicine and a culinary spice, and the Egyptians used it to decorate the tombs of the dead.

It is important to consider the safety concerns of any herbal medicine you take. You also must realize that many of the departments that bring up safety concerns are responsible for managing pharmaceutical drugs that have been manufactured in recent history. In the United States, there is no controlling authority or regulatory board specific to herbs. The most common reason you will see that these organizations bring up to question the safety of various herbs is "insufficient evidence to determine safety." Since there is no way to patent a naturally growing plant, there is often insufficient funding to conduct massive human studies.

Drug Interaction: If you are taking any prescription medications, it is important to always consult with the prescriber before adding any herbs to your diet.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Celery seed is completely safe in normal food amounts. In large quantities it may have emmenagogue properties. Emmenagogues stimulate blood flow in the pelvic region and can stimulate menstruation.

Other Concerns: Celery seed is generally safe but can cause allergic reactions if you are allergic to celery. In very large quantities, it may cause photosensitivity in some individuals.

Select Studies About Celery Seed

Celery seed for depression and anxiety: placebo-controlled

In this randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled study, 50 hypertension patients were given four placebo or four celery extract capsules over four weeks to see if celery seeds would reduce anxiety or depression symptoms. The study found that patients who took celery seed extract showed significant improvement. Celery seed was shown to reduce anxiety and depression symptoms such as nervousness, numbness, dizziness, flushed face, sweating, breathing difficulty, sadness, insomnia, fatigue, and irritability.

Celery seed for high blood pressure: placebo-controlled

In this randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled study, 52 patients struggling with high blood pressure were split into two groups: one given celery seed extract and the other placebo. The study showed that the group that took celery seed extract had lower blood pressure than the placebo group. There were also no negative side effects on those who took celery seed extract.
