What Is Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is a natural oil extracted from the white flesh of mature coconuts (Cocos nucifera). For centuries, it has been used in food, personal care products, herbal preparations, and traditional wellness practices around the world.

Naturally rich in fatty acids such as lauric acid, caprylic acid, and capric acid, coconut oil is valued for its versatility and stability. It remains solid at cooler temperatures and melts into a liquid when warmed, making it useful in everything from herbal infusions and skincare products to cooking and soapmaking.

Today, coconut oil is commonly used as a carrier oil for herbs, a moisturizing ingredient in personal care products, and a foundational ingredient in many natural wellness formulations.

Common ways to use Saponifed Coconut Oil

When coconut oil is combined with lye through a process called saponification, it is transformed into soap. While the original oil is chemically changed during this process, saponified coconut oil contributes cleansing properties, rich lather, and hardness to soap bars. This makes it one of the most commonly used oils in traditional and natural soapmaking.

How Coconut Oil is made

Coconuts are in season all year long in tropical climates. You will find them in groups ranging in size from 5-12; one tree can produce over 100 coconuts a year. Coconut fruit, or nut, is harvested right around every 45 days. Coconut oil is derived from the white flesh, or "meat," found inside the coconut. The coconut flesh is grated or ground and prepared for oil extraction.

This is done one of two main ways: Heat pressed or cold pressed.

Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil

Cold pressing extracts the oil with minimal heat, helping preserve the oil's natural aroma and characteristics. This method is often preferred for products where maintaining the oil's natural qualities is important.

Heat-Pressed Coconut Oil

Heat pressing uses higher temperatures during extraction, which can increase oil yield and efficiency. The resulting oil may undergo additional processing depending on its intended use.

After extraction, the oil is filtered to remove remaining particles and impurities, creating the smooth, versatile coconut oil used in food, wellness, and personal care products around the world.
